Property Tax Bill Information & Payment Options

When are my taxes due?
2012 property taxes are due on Friday, June 29.

How do I pay my bill?
You have a number of choices;

1.  Pre-authorized Payments
The Tax Instalment Plan (TIP) is a monthly instalment plan that allows taxpayers to pay their taxes in equal monthly withdrawals rather than a single annual payment.

Note: to avoid penalties, the envelope must be postmarked by Canada Post no later than June 29, 2012.

3. City Hall Cashier:

Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.
Debit card, cheque or cash only.  Post dated cheques are accepted.

4. City Hall's night depository boxes - located beside the east and west entrances of the building.

5. Most chartered banks, credit unions, trust companies or ATB Financial Branches.  Taxpayers who make payments via financial institutions need to be aware of processing times as The City must receive payment on or before the due date.

6. Online banking/ telephone banking:

  • Your account number for payment of City of Red Deer property tax is your City of Red Deer Roll Number. This appears on the front of your Property Tax Notice.
  • You need to enter 7 digits in the account number field. If your Roll number is less than 7 digits, add zeros in front of your roll number. For example, if your roll number is 123456, you would enter 0123456 in the account number field.
  • It is very important to confirm your current property roll number is the one registered on your bill payment menu.  The tax roll number is linked to the property.  If you have moved within Red Deer, the new roll number must be referenced on your bill menu.  Keep your transaction receipt to verify the payment date should proof be required.
  • Note: It is the property owner's responsibility to be aware of the processing time of the payment by financial institutions and to ensure that Internet and telephone banking payments are received by The City of Red Deer by the due date in order to avoid penalties.

When is my tax bill mailed to me?
2012 Tax bills will be mailed on May 25, 2012. If you haven't received your tax bill by June 8, please contact Revenue & Assessment Services at 403-342-8126 or e-mail at tax@reddeer.ca.  Please provide your name, property address and day time phone number.

What tax year is my bill for?
Property taxes in Alberta are based on the calendar year (January-December). When you make your payment at the end of June, you're paying your taxes for the previous six months and the next six months.

If my tax payment is late, will I be charged a penalty?
All current taxes left outstanding after the due date are charged a six per cent penalty. A further three per cent penalty will be charged on the unpaid tax balance on September 1 and November 1.

What is the penalty on tax arrears?
Taxes and penalties remaining unpaid after December 31 of the year for which they were levied become tax arrears. A penalty of two per cent on the unpaid balance will be added to and form part of the unpaid tax on the first  day of January, March, May, July, September and November.
