Applying for Electric Services & Meters

Electric Services
If you are an electrical contractor and/or consultant who wants to discuss the costs and/or our electrical service requirements, including voltage levels, service sizes, and type of metering, you should contact The City of Red Deer Electric Light and Power department as early as possible during the planning stage.

You should have the following information ready and questions answered before contacting the
Electric Light and Power department:

  • Legal land description from Land Titles.
  • Site plan with all existing utilities on or bordering the site. This will help identify conflicts such as driveways, clearance to buildings, signs of landscaping, and the best location and to access power. The site plan must be complete before we can give a quote for any services.
  • Temporary power requirements. Is construction power required? When do you need it?
  • Clearance. Will the power alignment be clear of obstructions and within 150mm (6") of final grade?
  • Duct requirements. During site preparation, will you be installing ducting for electrical wires? Are ducts required under new driveways?
  • Permanent power requirements. What voltage do you require: 120/208v or 347/600v, or other? What is the size of your main service? How many electric meters do you require? Are there multiple bays?
  • Date that permanent power is required at the site.

Meters
The following procedures must be followed if you want to have a new electric meter installed, an existing meter upgraded or a site energized.

  • Complete electrical work, have it inspected and obtain an electric permit. To apply for an electric permit, please contact the Inspections and Licensing Department.
  • Obtain a Site Identification Number (Site ID) to install an electric meter on a new site. No electric meter installation can be initiated without a Site ID. The City of Red Deer has contracted ENMAX Power to manage and maintain its Site ID assignment system. You can contact ENMAX Power Service Order Control at 403-358-5699 or fax 1-403-514-2975 to obtain a Site ID. Make sure you have your electric permit handy. If you are calling from outside the local Red Deer calling area,  phone toll free at 1-866-883-6629.  You can also use the online request form.
  • Choose an electric retail supplier. The best resource for assisting you in determining which supplier to choose is the provincial government's Office of the Utilities Consumer Advocate, or phone Alberta Government Services at 1-877-427-4088.
  • Call your retail supplier and ask them to contact ENMAX Power to request your meter installation and/or site energization. This request must come from your retail supplier.

We will then send our crew to your site to complete all the physical work required to install a meter and/or energize this site.
