Builder & Developer Frequently Asked Questions

What do I need to do when working around Electric Light and Power's 'green boxes' or 'square checker plated, surface mounted' service points?
You must request a 'locate' before digging near Electric Light and Power's pad mounted transformers and switchgear housed in green boxes, or near any residential service points that are identified by a surface mounted, square checker-plate since they are always connected to underground cables.

Avoid changing the grade or building any obstructions such as fences, shrubs, rocks, sheds or doghouses near green boxes or residential service points. These restrictions are part of the easement agreements that protect these facilities. Please contact us for any clarifications or to request a locate.

Can I obtain power for construction purposes?

Usually yes, but the cost may vary. Contact us at least three weeks before you require power for construction.

How do I know if the existing overhead lines are too close to the building and/or construction zone?

Operating equipment around overhead power lines is extremely dangerous and must be done with extreme caution. Maintain a clearance of at least three metres between construction equipment and people and the high voltage power lines at all times. Contact us if you need to come closer or need more information about the lines.

Permanent buildings, signs, trees or other structures must typically be six metres, measured horizontally, from the pole line or five meters below the conductors. Please contact Electric Light and Power for specific clearances for your particular situation.
