Micro-Generation

As the owner of the electric distribution system for the City of Red Deer, Electric Light & Power provides connection services for micro-generators. The micro-generation units must produce electricity using a renewable, environmentally friendly fuel source such as solar panels, small-scale hydro, wind, biomass, micro-cogeneration and fuel cells.

Process to Interconnect Mini Micro-Generators (MG)

This process is specific to inverter connected photovoltaic (PV) systems under 10 kW. Please contact Electric Light and Power for non-inverter or larger systems.

  1. Contact Inspections & Licensing to determine if a development and/or building permit is required.
  2. Complete and submit the following documents to EL&P:
    1. Completed and signed Micro-generation Application form
    2. Single Line Diagram, including:
      • The panel sizes and models

      • How the generation connects to the panel and the loads feed from the panel.
    3. Site Plan
    4. Building permit
    5. Development permit
    6. Completed and signed Interconnection Agreement

  1. EL&P will review the application and notify the applicant of its approval or changes required.
  2. Obtain your Electrical Permit and install your Mini MG.
  3. Apply for an Electrical Inspection and submit a copy of the Certificate of Inspection to EL&P.
  4. Once EL&P has received the Certificate of Inspection, and agreed on an installation date, the meter will be installed. After the installation is complete, the Interconnection Agreement and Application form will be finalized and a copy provided to you.
