Becoming a 9-1-1 Emergency Dispatcher

If you have considered pursuing a career path in this field, the following information will give you an overview of the recruitment process; the training programs involved, as well as some additional information which should help you determine if the role of a 9-1-1 Emergency Dispatcher is right for you.

Selection and Hiring:
The goal of our selection program is to identify candidates who possess the core competencies and critical skills necessary to become highly competent 9-1-1 Emergency Dispatchers.  The selection process begins with a thorough review of submitted resumes and applications.  Individuals who are selected from this review will be contacted by phone for an interview and invited to challenge our intake testing procedure. Candidates who successfully complete the evaluation process may then be offered a place in an upcoming 9-11 Emergency Dispatcher training program.

Applicants must be certified in EMD (Emergency Medical Dispatch), EFD (Emergency Fire Dispatch Certification), EMR (Emergency Medical Responder), and CPR.

Basic Requirements to be a 9-1-1 Emergency Dispatcher:

  • minimum grade 12
  • typing skills of 50 wpm
  • ability to obtain RCMP security clearance
  • effective interpersonal communication skills
  • strong organizational abilities
  • stress management skills
  • effective listening skills
  • good keyboard and computer skills
