Fire FAQs

Why does the fire truck always respond with the ambulance to calls for medical assistance?
Red Deer Emergency Services Department standard response to emergent calls for medical assistance consists of two Firemedics in an Advanced Life Support equipped ambulance, and two Firemedics in a Pumper TruckĀ or Rescue vehicle. The Firemedics in the ambulance are responsible for primary care and transportation of the client, while the Firemedics in the Pump or Rescue provide additional manpower and assistance as required on scene. Because they are often not required during transportation, they are able to return to the hall and are available to respond to any additional medical calls.

Can I go for a ride-along?
Individuals who meet certain criteria may be eligible for a "ride-along". Ride-alongs are arranged for individuals who:

  • Are currently enrolled in a pre-hospital care provider course (EMR, EMT-A, EMT-P)
  • Are investigating a career in Fire Suppression and Emergency Medical Services
  • Are at least 18 years of age

If you meet the above requirements you may contact the Deputy Chief of EMS in writing, stating who you are and your reason for requesting a ride along.
