Smoking & Candle Safety

Smoking Safety
Smoking is one of the most common causes of fire death in the home. It is the second leading cause of home fires.

  • Provide large, deep ashtrays for smokers.
  • Don't balance ashtrays on the arms of furniture or in narrow spots.
  • Be sure ashes are completely cooled before emptying them into the trash.
  • Never smoke in bed or while reclining in a chair.
  • Before you go to bed, check seat cushions where smokers have been sitting. The cushions may be smoldering and can fully ignite when you're asleep.
  • Don't place ashtrays or heaters where curtains or drapes may blow over them.
  • Install extra smoke detectors in smoker's bedrooms and over easy chairs.

Candle Safety
Candles

  • Candles should be mounted on non-combustible bases.
  • Keep candles away from combustibles.
  • Lighted candles should be kept within view of a responsible adult at all times.
  • Never leave children or pets alone in a room with lit candles.
  • Never leave candles to burn down to the bottom.
  • Use electric candles to avoid the hazard of open candle lights near combustible decorations at parties.
