Risk Watch is an injury prevention program for children in preschool through grade eight.
Risk Watch is currently being used in over 190 classrooms in Red Deer Public and the Red Deer Catholic School District No.39.
It is designed to help children and families create safer homes and communities by teaching them the skills and knowledge they need to make positive choices about their personal safety and well-being. Risk Watch seeks to prevent the major unintentional injuries that threaten children in this age group.
In Canada, nearly a quarter of all deaths among children under the age of 20 are the result of injuries. The cost of injuries exceeds $13.5 billion.
A few bumps and bruise are an unavoidable by-product of a healthy childhood. But most serious injuries, drownings, fires, scald burns, chokings, poisonings, and falls are not random "accidents" – they are predictable and preventable.
With education, motivation, and the support of caring adults, children can learn to be much safer.
