Air Quality Monitoring Trailer in Red Deer

The City of Red Deer, Parkland Airshed Management Zone (PAMZ) and Alberta Environment have replaced the air quality monitoring trailer parked along Riverside Drive. The new station became operational in February 2009.

PAMZ is a multi-stakeholder, non-profit society that develops and implements strategies to address air quality concerns in west central Alberta. Red Deer is the largest urban center within the PAMZ boundaries. The City has been a member of PAMZ since 2005.

The Riverside station is part of the National Air Pollution Surveillance Network. Data collected at the station is entered into a province-wide data management system and is available to the public through both the PAMZ and Alberta Environment websites.

PAMZ operates and maintains the trailer and equipment, which is supplied by Alberta Environment. The analyzers in the trailer are capable of detecting low level concentrations of compounds that may cause chronic or acute health disorders. Currently this equipment monitors many different substances, including nitrogen and sulphur compounds, carbon monoxide, methane, total hydrocarbons, ozone and fine particulate matter. In Red Deer the biggest impact to air quality comes from compounds commonly associated with vehicle emissions.

The data collected provides information on the type, amount and potential sources of air pollution in Red Deer, which helps The City of Red Deer develop effective programs to good air quality.
