On Thursday, September 22, 2011 Red Deerians celebrated World Car Free Day for the first time ever and we are happy to report it was a success!
An impressive number of residents reported participating and of those 98 percent indicated it was a positive experience. In addition to many people reporting they walked or cycled on September 22, Transit service saw nearly a 10 percent increase in bus ridership as a result of the free fares that were offered. This percentage is equivalent to 1,300 additional passengers. Based on these participation results greenhouse gas emissions were reduced by approximately 4,370 kg on World Car Free Day.
What is World Car Free Day? It started in Europe in the 1990’s as Car Free Day with the goal of reducing car dependency and ultimately raising awareness and reducing greenhouse gas emissions. In 2000 it became a global initiative where cities around the world encouraged their residents to go sans auto by finding alternative ways to get around.
For one day, walk away from the steering wheel, here is how:
- Get ready and plan your route.

- Ride your bicycle to work and try out the brand new commuter bicycle lanes.
- Find a carpool partner and catch a ride.
