 The Story of Stuff
One person’s trash is another person’s treasure. So don't put your unwanted items in the garbage. Set them out on the curb for Kick it to the Curb weekend October 15 & 16, 2011 as part of Waste Reduction Week.

Items could include:

  • Books, CDs and DVDs.
  • Old furniture and small appliances.
  • Construction materials - including drywall and hardware such as nails, bolts and screws.
  • Kitchen gadgets, dishes, cutlery, pots and pans.
  • Unwanted gifts.
  • …and more

Rules for setting out the items

  • Place items at the curb.
  • Place stickers or signs on items with the word "FREE".
  • Ensure any items that you want to keep are away from your set out items or tucked away safely in your garage.
  • At the end of the day, bring any uncollected items back to your home.

Please consider safety when deciding which items to set out to the curb.
The Consumer Product Safety Bureau of Health Canada advises that used children's items such as baby walkers, yo-yo balls, cribs, car seats, strollers, playpens, bath seats, mattresses, blinds, toys and other child-related items should not be placed out at the curb.

Etiquette associated with the event should be:

  • Take only the items at the curb marked "free."
  • Respect property — don't walk or drive on lawns or gardens.
  • Giveaway items should still be in good condition.
  • Don't discard any items on another lawn.
  • Consider safety when deciding which items to give away.

Kerry Wood Nature Centre is also holding a Trash to Treasure Swap Meet to welcome Waste Reduction Week! Bring your useable, unwanted items and browse for something you may need: Friday 5-7 pm, Saturday & Sunday 10 am - 5 pm.

Remember:
Remaining treasures can be donated to charitable organizations, or sold or given away on local websites such as Kijiji and Freecycle.
