Naturescaping is a landscaping method that uses principles including native plants and smart design to reduce your environmental impact. If you already have water wise landscaping, or are planning to landscape your residential property, enter The City of Red Deer’s 2011 Water-Wise Naturescaping Contest!
The 2011 Water-Wise Naturescaping contest is open to Red Deer citizens who naturescape residential properties located within city limits. Entries will be judged on water conservation, landscape display and biodiversity.
Contest Rules:
All entries must be located within the Red Deer city limits.
The contest applies to residential property only.
Incomplete applications may be disqualified.
Deadlines:
Deadline for submitting entries is 11:59 pm Mountain Daylight Time on August 12, 2011. Five finalists will be selected and the judges will visit the finalists' gardens/yards to determine the winners. The winners will then be announced on or before September 1, 2011.The City of Red Deer reserves the right to adjust any deadline(s) as a result of causes beyond it's immediate control.
Entries must include:
- Minimum of 5 and maximum 10 coloured photographs. Either digital or hard copies are acceptable.
- A couple of sentences describing the water efficient features within the landscape.
Criteria
Your entries will be evaluated based on the following 3 criteria;
Display
Plant display, permanent planting (trees, shrubs), design and use of space and curb appeal.
Biodiversity
Native vegetation, earth friendly (composting, rain barrels, attractants and unique features), and wildlife welcoming (water, shelter, food and space).
Water Conservation/Maintenance
Proportions of grasses and bedding plants, layout features, use of ground cover (mulch, crush rock, native plants), and water source.
How to Enter:
Submit your completed entry form and photographs to The City of Red Deer Environmental Services Department, Attn: Naturescaping Contest. Entries may also be emailed to: environmentalservices@reddeer.ca

Prizes:
1st Prize - $150 gift certificate to the local garden center of your choice
2nd Prize - $100 gift certificate to the local garden centre of your choice
3rd Prize - $75 gift certificate to the local garden centre of your choice
Your Rights:
You will retain all rights to any photograph you submit - including ownership if applicable - other than those rights licensed in the next sentence. By entering the contest, you hereby grant the City of Red Deer (i) a nonexclusive, worldwide, irrevocable, royalty-free license to reproduce, distribute, publicly display the photographs you submit to the City of Red Deer, and (ii) the right to use your name in promotions and other publications.
The City of Red Deer shall determine winner eligibility in its sole and absolute discretion. All decisions made by the judges are final.
