Blue boxes are making Red Deer beautiful. Thanks for pitching into the big picture.

Signing up for the Blue Box Program
If you are new to the city of Red Deer and have applied for utilities, you are already signed up for the recycling program and a City of Red Deer blue box has been assigned to your address. If, however, a blue box was not left behind by the previous resident you can request one by phoning The City of Red Deer's Blue Line at 403-340-BLUE (2583) or using the online Blue Box form and one will be delivered to your door at no cost.

To guarantee that your blue box is picked up, it must be out by 7 a.m. on your regular collection day. Recyclables are picked up on all statutory holidays with the exception of Christmas Day and New Year's Day.

What can be placed in the blue box?

  • Glass - jars and bottles. Empty, rinse and remove lids and labels
  • Metals - tins and cans

Apartment Recycling
Multi-family home residents also can participate in the city-wide effort to increase the reuse of our natural resources.

To make it as easy as possible for each apartment resident to take part in the program, specially marked bins are provided at each complex. Simply place your recyclables in the appropriate bin at any time and they will be recycled. All the material listed under the residential recycling program will be accepted in the multi-family program except glass. Glass, jars and bottles can be dropped off at the public drop off depot.

Recycling Steps

  1. Rinse and remove caps, labels and lids from all glass items.
  2. Rinse and remove labels from all cans.
  3. Cans may be flattened to make more room.
  4. No loose tin can lids please. Leave lids attached to the cans.
  5. Keep all items separate (e.g. don't place items in jars).
  6. Rinse, remove labels and caps and crush Code "2" plastic containers.
  7. Newspaper, magazines and mixed paper can be put into an untied plastic grocery bag. Keep dry.
  8. Flatten cardboard boxes and box board. Remove all waxed paper, cellophane and plastic handles. Keep dry.
  9. Rinse and remove plastic spouts and flatten milk cartons. Place overflow material in untied plastic grocery bags and place beside the container. Limit one type of item to each bag.
