Sanitary Sewer FAQ'S

What is causing the sewer smell in my basement?

If you have a sewer smell in your basement, but your sewer does not appear to be backing up, simply try flushing the toilet regularly. You should also try adding water to the "P" trap in your basement floor drain.

If you notice this smell during the winter months, the vent on your roof may be blocked with snow and/or ice. Once it is cleared, the odour should dissipate.

My sewer is backing up, what should I do?

Your first step is to phone a plumber. They will be able to assess the problem and clear the blockage. In many cases, the blockage will be on your side of the sewer line. However, if the blockage is on the City property, the plumber will send the invoice to The City of Red Deer.

Blockage in Sewer Mains?

Such things as improper care of grease traps can cause blockage in sewer mains.

How You Can Help

·         Do not deposit grease down the drain

·         Scrape out the grease into a container

·         Wipe the rest of the grease out with a paper towel

·         Throw paper towel and container in the trash
