Finding the Work

General Contractors
The City of Red Deer advertises to let everyone know what work is available on which to bid. Depending on the size of the project, The City will advertise locally, as well as to the construction industry. Notices are posted in the following locations:

Local Newspaper: The base line advertising media for The City of Red Deer is the Red Deer Advocate, a daily tabloid serving Central Alberta.

Provincial News Media: Depending on the size and type of the project, an advertisement is also placed in Construction Alberta News.

Construction Associations:
The City provides tender information to the Red Deer, Edmonton and Calgary Construction Associations.

The advertising period for most contracts is two weeks, although this may be longer for more complex jobs.

The advertisement (Invitation to Tender) informs the Contractor of:

  • The Project Title
  • Tender Closing Location
  • Time and Date
  • Description of the Work
  • Address where Documents can be obtained and/or viewed
  • Price of Tender Documents
  • Bid Security requirements
  • Safety Certificate requirements
  • Pre-tender Meeting, if any

Contractors should not ask City staff to phone them to advise them when a certain type of publicly tendered work is about to come up or is already being advertised. The City gets these requests from time to time, but simply cannot do it for two very good reasons: The City does not have the staff to keep track of who might be interested in what work; and such calls could easily be mistaken for favouritism!

Subcontractors
Often, potential subcontractors and suppliers, after seeing a City project advertised in the newspaper, may decide to submit bids to a General Contractor. Documents may be viewed at the following locations:

Engineering Department or Public Works Department
Office of the Engineering Consultant retained by The City to manage a project.

Construction Association offices in Red Deer, Edmonton and Calgary
A list of Contractors' names that have obtained documents is available from the Engineering Department, Public Works Department or the Engineering Consultant, depending where the Tender originated.
