North Red Deer: A Century of Change

North Red Deer was established as a hamlet in 1894 when the C&E Rail Bridge (CPR) and line were completed. The community received Village status on February 17, 1911. The Village was a bustling industrial Community.

It remained an independent municipality until January 1, 1948 when it was amalgamated with the City of Red Deer.

This PowerPoint presentation consists of 49 slides that provide a brief glimpse into the changes that have taken place in North Red Deer over the past 110 years.

The images are of early buildings, railways and industry in North Red. They include the first wooden traffic bridge built over the Red Deer River in 1884, and an 1892 image of the Calgary and Edmonton Railway (C&E) Bridge over the Red Deer River. A 1908 map of the Village of North Red Deer shows the early layout of the community.

Most of the images in the presentation were gathered by the North Red Deer 75th Anniversary Committee and were subsequently donated to the Red Deer & District Archives.
