Building permits are required for each of the following:
- Uncovered decks
- Basement development
- Mobile homes
An application form for a building permit for the noted developments must be submitted and accompanied by a site plan. In all cases the applicable attached specification sheet must be filled out in full.
Please ensure that the site plans submitted for a building permit are legible and drawn reasonably to scale, with a description of the location and dimensions of the project; also ensure to include all areas being developed.
Uncovered Decks When applying for a permit to build a single-family dwelling and the plans indicate a deck, a separate building permit will be required for the deck construction. The minimum fee for a deck permit is $60 plus Provincial Service Fee (PSF).
In order to obtain a permit for a deck, the following is required:
- Two copies of your site plan
- Completed detailed specifications sheet

Basement Development Basement development, when applied for with the original building permit, will not require any additional permits. Basement development is to be completed prior to a final building inspection. If the original plans do not indicate basement development and the basement is subsequently developed, an additional permit will be required with a final inspection completed. In order to obtain a permit for basement development, the following is required:
- Floor plan indicating all room sizes
- What each room will be used for
- Sizes of windows in each room
- Total sq ft of development
Mobile Homes & Additions All mobile homes and additions require a building permit.
Please note: Inspections & Licensing Department will not close the file or permit until all construction is complete and complies with the Alberta Building Code.
