Recreation & Culture

Red Deer's recreation opportunities are staggering. Beautiful parks, active lifestyles and sports and sports teams are a source of pride for many Red Deer citizens.

Parks
Red Deer's beautiful parks and natural green spaces are well-know throughout Alberta and invite quiet retreats and action packed getaways. A water playground, participark, western ranch and wildlife sanctuary are just some of The City's park highlights. Biking, paddling, skating, cross-country skiing, athletics, bird watching, picnics and peaceful walks can all be enjoyed in various parks and facilities along streams, creeks and the Red Deer River.

Trails
Within the city, Waskasoo Park offers over 80 kilometres of paved and shale trails along the river valley for a wide variety of recreational pursuits such as cycling, hiking, cross-country skiing and horseback riding.

National & Provincial Parks
The Banff and Jasper National Parks are easily accessible to Red Deer residents, as are many provincial parks and lakes. Sylvan Lake is an outstanding example of one of Central Alberta's beautiful lakes.

Golf Courses
Red Deer offers many choices for the golf enthusiast. The River Bend Golf Course is a municipal 18-hole championship caliber golf course in Waskasoo Park. An 18-hole private course bordering the Red Deer River along with three other public courses provide a good variety. Courses at nearby Lacombe, Innisfail, Sylvan Lake and Wolf Creek add to the abundance of golfing opportunities.

Recreation Facilities
Located throughout the city are sports fields, tennis courts, swimming pools and fitness centres. There are five artificial ice surfaces and numerous natural outdoor rinks to meet the demand of all winter sports. The Centrium, a 6,000 seat multi-purpose facility hosts sports and entertainment events. Past world class events include the Nokia Brier Curling, Skate Canada, and the World Junior Hockey Championships.

The Collicutt Centre, which opened in the spring of 2001 is the community common; a state of the art leisure and wellness centre. The Collicutt Centre offers an ice arena, soccer pavilion, multi-purpose field house, 4-lane track, fitness and wellness studio, wave pool and water park, a climbing wall and much more! It is 250,000 square feet of fun. A single visit fee gives you access to all the above with complimentary sports equipment.

Recreation Programs
The City of Red Deer, sporting groups, and various community associations offer a host of recreational opportunities for children and adults alike. Opportunities range from recreational classes and programs, family festivals, sports teams and community groups, and drop-in activities. Ski Hills & Cross-country Trails
Red Deer's Canyon Ski Area is Alberta's largest non-mountain downhill skiing facility. For the cross-country enthusiast, Canyon Ski area, Waskasoo Park and  Red Deer College, offer beautiful trails. By car, skiers are within three hours of internationally renowned slopes and trails in the Rocky Mountains.

Campgrounds
The Lions Campground is linked to the Waskasoo Park trail and offers enough sites to meet just about everyone's expectations. Campgrounds in surrounding areas make Central Alberta a favourite camping destination.

Culture, Entertainment & Shopping
Opportunities and events in Red Deer and Central Alberta's bustling communities keep residents entertained and involved year-round.

Museums & Interpretive Centres
The Red Deer and District MuseumKerry Wood Nature Interpretive Centre, and Fort Normandeau bring a historical and educational perspective to Red Deer and the Central Alberta region together with the Alberta Sports Hall of Fame and Museum.

Festivals & Events

WHL Hockey
For recreation enthusiasts who prefer to watch from the sidelines, Red Deer is proud to be home to the Western Hockey League's Red Deer Rebels.

Arts & Culture Facilities & Organizations
The state of the art Red Deer College Arts Centre, the Westerner and many other venues throughout the city offer a variety of live performances including music, drama and dance.

The City's abundant arts and culture organizations provide opportunities throughout the community to get involved in a wide range of drama, musical and other cultural pursuits.

Restaurants
Red Deer can accommodate almost everyone's entertainment needs. With more than 160 restaurants to choose from you won't be disappointed with your options - you'll find everything from ethnic cuisine to western fare.

Shopping
With major shopping areas on each end of the city and countless shopping opportunities in-between, Red Deer is Central Alberta's shopping centre. You'll enjoy searching for unique treasures in quaint stores and finding great bargains in some of the wholesale shops. The Red Deer Farmer's Market is also a great destination for shoppers and is open to locals and visitors throughout the spring, summer and fall.
