The Inspections & Licensing Department issues all building, electrical, plumbing and heating permits needed for building occupancy, moving and demolition. The City of Red Deer has no local building ordinances or standards beyond those standards in the Alberta Building Code. This department also carries out the inspections of the Alberta Building Code. Building Permits Building permits are required for the construction of new buildings or demolition, repairs, alternations or additions to existing buildings. Building permits are not required for painting and decorating maintenance that does not affect electrical or mechanical work, or interior non-structural alternations of less than $1,000 in value. Plumbing & Heating PermitsPlumbing and heating permits are required for the installation of plumbing fixtures, water lines, furnaces and duct work, as well as alterations to waste, vent lines and duct work. Electrical Permits Electric permits are required prior to construction of new buildings or the alterations of existing buildings. Fees are required for all permits, with the amount varying depending on the type of work being performed. Occupancy PermitAn occupancy permit may be required prior to occupying a building for business purposes. You may not be able to obtain a Business License until an Occupancy Permit has been issued. An Occupancy Permit verifies that construction, electrical wiring, heating and plumbing have been completed in a safe manner and in accordance with the examined building renovation plans and/or that the premises that you are about to occupy are structurally safe and suitable for your particular business. Occupancy Permits are not always required depending on the previous use of the building.
