What is a Census?

A census is an official door-to-door count of the number of people living in a community. In Red Deer, census data is gathered to determine the population, assist in planning the future of our community and to calculate grants.

Census workers (enumerators) go door-to-door and visit every household in Red Deer. They are identified with picture ID cards. Citizens with any questions about the identity of a census worker should phone The City Census Office at (403) 342-8317 for verification.

How frequently is a census conducted?
As a result of strong growth, a census has been conducted every year since 1999.

What information is collected?
Enumerators ask residents how many people live in the household, the genders and year of birth of each person in the household. Additionally, dependent on the information needs of The City, questions such as length of residency, type of occupation, type of residence, etc., may also be collected.
