(Red Deer, Alberta) – Red Deerians will go to the polls on October 18, 2010 after City Council officially declared a municipal election at today’s City Council meeting.
“We want all Red Deer residents to cast their vote and take part in the 2010 municipal election on October 18,” said Elaine Vincent, Returning Officer. “Municipal elections are only held once every three years, which makes it that much more important for people to cast a ballot and help drive our city.”
Voters will elect one mayor and eight city councillors. “These elected representatives will make decisions about everything from what services The City provides, to how we move forward in areas such as policing, emergency services, roads, parks and public works,” said Vincent.
Voters will also elect seven public school trustees and five Catholic school trustees.
Polling stations will be set up across the city so people can vote from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Election Day. But that’s not the only way to vote. Residents who aren’t able to cast their ballot on Election Day can vote by special ballot or by visiting an advance vote polling station that will be set up in the weeks prior to October 18.
“We want to make it as easy as possible for people to cast a ballot,” said Vincent.
Voters must be at least 18 years old, a Canadian citizen, have lived in Alberta for six consecutive months before Election Day and be a resident of Red Deer on Election Day.
Individuals who intend to run in the 2010 municipal election must complete a nomination form signed by at least five electors who are eligible to vote in the election. All nominations must then be submitted to the returning officer between 10 a.m. and noon on nomination day - September 20, 2010.
