Snow Storage Sites

How many snow storage sites does The City of Red Deer currently operate?

The City currently operates two permanent, engineered snow storage facilities. The north site is located in the northwest area of Red Deer in the Edgar Industrial Park. The south site is located in the southeast area of Red Deer just south of Delburne Road on 40 Avenue. Having two facilities provides for additional snow storage and shortens haul distances.

What is a snow storage site and what purpose does it serve?

During the winter months, The City of Red Deer clears snow from municipal roadways and facilities. The snow is hauled to a storage site where it is contained until it melts.

Where will the melted snow go?
Solids and suspended particulate matter from the meltwater will settle into a detention pond. The remaining melted water from the northwest site on Edgar Industrial Drive is released into the storm sewer system. The remaining melted water from the southeast site on 40 Avenue is released into an open ditch and eventually makes its way to Piper Creek, the closest water body.
