Q & A - Snow & Ice Policy Review

Q.
Has the Snow and Ice Control Policy recently been reviewed?
A. Council approved the Terms of Reference for a review of The City's Snow and Ice Control policy and operations on May 30, 2011.  An objective of this review is to provide clarity and expand on the existing policy by combining snow and ice control for roads, sidewalks, trails and transit stops in a single collective document.  In addition, this review is intended to provide Council with Level of Service options for snow and ice control on residential streets, sidewalks and trails.  The results fo the review will be presented to Council prior to the 2012 budget discussions in December.  An updated policy will follow Council's resolution.

Q. Was the Snow and Ice Control Policy reviewed prior to 2011?
A. The policy was last reviewed in 2005 when consultants were hired to conduct the study and public input from a citizen Advisory Committee was obtained.  The general finding from the study was that there is a need to change the policy and practice of snow and ice control for Red Deer.  The Advisory Committee was asked to select from a suite of options associated with the different roadway classifications to determine a reasonable level of service.  Recommendations were presented to City Council in December 2005.
