Supporting children, youth and families is a high priority for the Red Deer City RCMP. In keeping with the RCMP National Youth Priority, members of the Red Deer City Detachment are committed to working with young people to prevent crimes involving them as either victims or offenders. Our approach focuses on working with our community partners and schools to provide broad-based community programs and school-based crime prevention programs to students of all ages.

Red Deer City RCMP are working with youth in our community through the following programs:

School Resource Officer Program
Alberta Association of School Resource Officers (AASRO)
Cop Cards
Cops for Kids
Safety Bear
Child Identification

Alberta Association of School Resource Officers (AASRO)

Cop Cards
Red Deer City Detachment Cop Cards bare a picture of an RCMP officer with biographical information and a message from the officer on the back. Cop Cards are distributed to students and youths to encourage communication and connection with RCMP officers. Many students strive to collect the whole "set" of Cop Cards and are very excited as they begin to recognize our local RCMP members from their Cop Card collection. A new Cop Card series is developed every two years and is sponsored through community dollars and advertising.

Cops for Kids
Cops for Kids is a Red Deer City RCMP community policing program which strives to help young boys and girls gain a more positive understanding of the role of police. Red Deer RCMP officers volunteer their time to attend sporting events to share educational activities and spend time with Red Deer youth. This past year the Cops for Kids Program took in a Red Deer Rebels game, an Edmonton Eskimos game, went bowling and built wood projects at Totem. Big Brothers and Big Sisters of Red Deer sponsor the children who become a part of the Cops for Kids program in Red Deer.

Child Identification
The Corps of Commissionaires of Red Deer will provide child identification to families in Red Deer. A Child Identification package would provide the RCMP with valuable personal information should your child ever go missing. To make an appointment, contact the Corps of Commissionaires at (403) 314-4142.

Safety Bear
Safety Bear is the RCMP mascot who asks children to "promise to remember all safety rules, respect other people's property, take pride in my school and community, and help the police to prevent crime." You will see Safety Bear at special events throughout Red Deer including:

  • Westerner Days Parade
  • School Events
  • Police Week
  • Charity Checkstop
  • Community Events

Safety Bear has some colouring pages for kids to color.
