Citizens on Patrol works closely with the police and act as eyes and ears in the community. They actively patrol the city in pairs and report suspicious or criminal events to the police. C.O.P volunteers use their private vehicles while on patrol and are in constant contact with the RCMP. Cellular phones and police scanners provide the key connection between volunteers and the RCMP. When reporting suspicious activity, volunteers call either 911 or the RCMP complaint line and their supplied cell phones are logged into the system and immediately recognized by the dispatch operators. The patrol shifts are flexible allowing each member the ability to choose the time and duration of their individual patrols. Active members are required to complete four hours of patrols per month. C.O.P members do not get involved in incidents or confront individuals in any way. Volunteers are required to remain in their vehicles at all times and only observe and report incidents to the police. The C.O.P Association and the Red Deer City RCMP are continually seeking volunteers that want to become involved with the program and are interested in taking action to help keep Red Deer a safe and vital community.
