The RCMP is committed to the safety of the citizens in the communities we police. One of the highest priorities regarding safety is the reduction of domestic violence. Domestic violence can include mental, physical, sexual and emotional abuse by one partner towards his or her partner, their children, the elderly and disabled. By extension, the abuser may at times destroy or withdraw familial access to personal property which can include pets, friends or anything that can be leveraged against those persons he or she wishes to intimidate.

As part of our commitment to reduce these crimes, the Red Deer City RCMP Detachment has a Domestic Violence Unit that is comprised of three members along with a social worker. The Domestic Violence Unit is committed to working in partnership with Federal, Provincial and local agencies to promote awareness and prevention of family violence.

The establishment of this unit is an innovative, leading-edge approach to providing families in Red Deer the opportunity to have non-violent relationships and healthy homes.

Domestic Violence Unit
This unit investigates higher risk and the more complex domestic violence cases. These investigations are often more in depth and require additional attention being expended obtaining further information from victims, witnesses and other agencies to enhance the information provided to the Crown Prosecutor for court case preparation. This unit reviews all domestic abuse cases and determines that the investigation has been completed to a high standard and assists in rectifying any incomplete steps.

Domestic violence investigations include violence between partners of present and former relationships. These relationships include:

  • married
  • divorced
  • separated
  • common-law
  • boyfriend - girlfriend
  • gay
  • lesbian

This unit liaises with a number of agencies such as the Crown Prosecutors Office, Children Services, Women's Shelter and Women's Outreach Programs.
