The General Investigation Section, known as G.I.S., is a specialized investigative unit within the Detachment at Red Deer City RCMP. The officers perform their duties in plain clothes and use unmarked police cars. This section is responsible for managing / investigating Criminal Code and federal and provincial statutes which involve major criminal offences under these legislations. Major criminal investigations may include: homicide, sexual assaults, violent crimes against persons, abductions, robberies, break and enters, organized crimes and drug investigations.
G.I.S. often sponsors special projects to address specific problems within the community. Members from each team will collaborate to provide investigative knowledge and support, resulting in successful investigations and an increased rate of solving crime in Red Deer.
The Red Deer City G.I.S. is subdivided into four specialized units:
1. Persons Unit
2. Property Unit
3. Street Unit
4. Organized Crime Unit
Persons Unit The members of the Persons Unit at Red Deer City Detachment investigate serious crimes relating to sexual or physical abuse, sudden deaths, armed robberies or other serious crimes against persons.
Property Crime Unit The team members of the Property Crime Unit at Red Deer City Detachment are responsible for the investigation of internal thefts, counterfeit funds, forgeries and business frauds of a more serious nature or value. As well, this unit coordinates and investigates offences that relate to individuals responsible for organized or repeated property crime in Red Deer.
Street Crime Unit The Street Crime Unit are members at Red Deer City Detachment who focus on drug investigations within Red Deer. This team of members work closely with the members of the Property Crime Unit and the Persons Unit. The investigations of the Street Crime Unit will often afford evidence and information which lead to the solving of other property and persons offences.
Organized Crime Unit The team members of the Organized Crime Unit are tasked with the detection and prosecution of organized crime (drugs, fraud, trafficking, commercial crime). Organized Crime unit members are developing an integrated response to organized crime by working closely with "K" Division RCMP, Federal, Provincial and Municipal Enforcement Agencies, other police services and most importantly, the citizens of Red Deer.
