The Police Dog Service (PDS) is a specialized unit within the RCMP. The PDS provides operational support to RCMP members in:

  • locating evidence
  • tracking suspects
  • guarding scenes of crime
  • providing VIP protection and crowd control
  • searching for explosives
  • searching for missing persons or bodies
  • participating in crime prevention and community relation programs

Dog handlers and their dogs are trained at the Police Dog Training Centre in Innisfail, Alberta.

Red Deer City RCMP and Red Deer Sub-Division share the resources of three dog handlers and their dogs. These teams are on call within Red Deer and the Central Alberta area twenty four hours of the day.
