Alarm Bylaw FAQs

Where can I get more information about the Alarm Bylaw?

Do I require an Alarm Permit?
An Alarm Permit is required to operate a residential or a commercial alarm system in the City of Red Deer. Permits are available at:

  • The City of Red Deer Cashier, Main Floor, City Hall.
  • The cost is $25.
  • Permits are not transferable to a new building or to a new owner.

Is there a penalty if I do not have an Alarm Permit?
Yes. A fine of :
  • $50 will will be charged for the first offence 
  • $250 for the second and subsequent offences.

Is there a response fee if police are dispatched to my home or business?
The City of Red Deer charges a response fee when police respond to an alarm signal where unauthorized entry has not occurred and no police emergency exists The fees are:

  • $20 for residences 
  • $40 - $60 for businesses

If there is a police emergency, no fee will be charged.

Is there a penalty if I have too many false alarms?
Yes. If you have more than three false alarms in any six month period your permit will be revoked and use of your alarm system will be prohibited. A $200 fee is required to reinstate your permit. For more information on this or other Bylaws, visit the Bylaws page.
