Reduce Credit and Bank Card Frauds

The Red Deer City RCMP would like to offer a few safety tips to ensure your personal information, credit and bank cards are safe from fraud. There are a few safety precautions citizens should take to reduce their chances of falling victim to these crimes.

The Red Deer City RCMP suggest the following:

  • Do not take your eyes off your bank or credit card; if an employee needs to go to a terminal to swipe your card, go with them and watch what they do with your card.
  • When using a cash machine make sure there are no loose pieces on the machine. If something is loose give it a tug, if it comes off easily do not use it and notify the bank or police.
  • If a transaction does not go through when making a purchase ask to see the cancelled transaction receipt; look at it to make sure it is cancelled.
  • When using a bank machine use something to block the numbers you press from sight.
  • When using an interact pad in a store make sure no one sees your PIN number; cover it with something when you press the numbers to ensure no one can see.
  • Inspect the back of the interact pad to ensure no one has tampered with it. All security seals should look new and should not have the appearance of being peeled back and re-stuck or taped down.
  • Check your account information frequently to ensure there is no suspicious activity on your account.

Report any suspicious transactions to your bank, credit card company and the police.
