In Your Car
Keep your vehicle locked at all times, whether moving or parked.
When driving at night, use well-lit streets and parking lots that are open to easy observation.
If you feel you are in danger, press the horn repeatedly in short blasts to attract attention.
If you think you are being followed, pull into the nearest gas station or safe place. Do not drive home.
Plan and know your route before you leave.
Do not pick up hitchhikers.
If you break down in an isolated area, follow these steps:
Pull your vehicle safely off the road.
Turn on the emergency flashers.
Raise the hood.
Tie a bright coloured cloth to your aerial.
Remain in your car with the doors locked and windows rolled up (leave a small space open for ventilation, especially if you are able to and need to run the engine).
Wait for help to come.
Should a passing motorist stop, stay in your car and ask him/her to send help back to you. Use your best judgement in accepting any other assistance.
