Phase 1: Hazardous Materials Removal & Site Preparation A hazardous materials assessment was conducted in June 2008. All hazardous materials must be removed before any renovation or demolition can begin so people who are on the site are not exposed to asbestos or other unsafe substances.
The hazardous materials removal process aimed to:
- isolate work areas
- protect workers
- minimize the release of asbestos fibres
- ensure adequate clean-up and decontamination
Other steps will also be completed during phase one to prepare the site for construction:
- fencing was set up to define work areas and public areas
- trees in the construction zone were either relocated or recycled as mulch and firewood

Phase 2: Demolition Demolition took place from July to October 2008. A large part of the interior of the facility was demolished.
- most walls and floors throughout the building were torn out
- the swimming pool was prepared for reconstruction
- the electrical and plumbing systems were stripped back

Phase 3: Reconstruction Demolition is now complete and we are in the reconstruction phase of the revitalization. New construction will renew the inside of the building and expand the facility.
Upgrades and renovations to the arena were completed in September 2009 with the remainder of the Dawe slated to reopen its doors in late spring or early summer 2010.
