This digital story illustrates how a local family and their adorable 8-year old, Hannah, have fully embraced the importance of leading a life filled with activity, sport, artistic pursuits and as a result, a whole lot of fun.

The video illustrates how Hannah and her family embody Long-Term Athlete Development, one of the Canadian Sport for Life philosophies. Long-Term Athlete Development is a physical activity and sport development philosophy that provides a safe, enjoyable and progressive pathway for children to pursue healthy physical activity.

Sport and Active Living are interconnected
As parents, coaches, sport programmers and health providers, we recognize that sports and physical activity play an important role in our children’s healthy growth and development, and the likelihood of life-long active living.

In recent times, however, physical activity has suffered serious decline among Canadian children. Medical and sport research shows that our children are increasingly at risk for obesity and disease due to low levels of activity and poor nutritional habits.

“Sports and physical activity play an important role in children’s health and development,” said Rob Meckling, Community & Program Facilitator with The City of Red Deer. “The Long-Term Athlete Development philosophy emphasizes fundamental movement skills and how introducing children to a variety of physical activities will assist them in achieving not only sport excellence, but living active lives as adults.”
