What is the campaign about?
The Small Acts campaign is designed to remind each of us about the importance of small acts and how these can support children, youth, families, seniors and communities. While these acts may appear small, they incorporate elements of protective factors, which are part of the larger picture of prevention.
In February of 2012, Red Deer & District Family and Community Support Services (FCSS) Board initiated the Small Acts campaign to promote the protective factor of "positive parenting practices in day to day life." This and other protective factors are gleaned from work by Calgary FCSS and the Social Sustainability Framework, and form the basis for building resilience among children, youth, families, seniors and the community. These protective factors are a pivotal part of the prevention mandate of FCSS.
Other protective factors for children and youth include:
- Living in a strong family with high capacity (below)
- Living in a strong community of residence and of affiliation (below)
- Secure emotional bonds/attachment with parents/caregivers
- Positive peer relationships and friendships
- Positive adult mentors and role models
- High social competence and sense of identity, sense of efficacy/leadership skills
- Engagement in school and learning
- Positive and safe school and community environments
- Participation in structured extra-curricular activities, particularly those with a positive child/youth development focus
- (For low income children) living in a mixed income neighbourhood
