Baby Strollers
For the safety of children, other customers and our Operators, the following guidelines have been developed for customers with baby strollers who wish to ride public transit in Red Deer.
Customers wishing to bring strollers on board transit buses should recognize their personal responsibility to board safely when using strollers.
The following guidelines were drafted after reviewing similar guidelines from a number of other transit systems throughout Canada.
Types of Strollers Recommended
Strollers preferably should be lightweight, small in overall size and foldable.
Children in Strollers (Conventional High Floor Buses)
Children should be removed from strollers and held safely in the arms of the parent or guardian. Customers choosing to leave children in strollers should proceed to the rear of the bus, holding the stroller firmly at all times. Braking devices on the stroller should always be applied. The rear of the bus is a safe location and allows for the front area of the bus to remain free for other passengers to board.
Children in Strollers (Accessible Low Floor Buses)
Children should be removed from strollers and held safely in the arms of the parent or guardian. Customers choosing to leave children in strollers should proceed to the wheelchair locations, raise the seats to expose the wheelchair area, then park the stroller with the braking devise applied. When exiting the bus, the wheelchair area seats should be lowered as a courtesy to the next customer. Please note that customers in wheelchairs have priority for the wheelchair areas of accessible Low Floor buses. If two customers in wheelchairs wish to use the two wheelchair areas, the customer with the stroller should remove the child from the stroller, fold it and proceed to another seated area of the bus.
Assisting with Boarding of Strollers
Customers requiring assistance when boarding with strollers should have a companion. Transit Operators may assist, unless they are unable to do so due to a medical or physical condition.
Rush Hour & Busy Routes (Crowded Buses)
During busier times, where overcrowding exists, Transit Operators have the right to refuse customers with unfolded strollers.
