Bike & Ride Program

Bus with Bike Rack

Red Deer Transit has a great way to keep you and the environment healthy!

Bike racks are installed on the front of all Red Deer Transit buses and are available for use all year round on all routes. Two bikes can be transported at a time while the customer rides on the bus. There is no extra charge for this service.

Loading your bicycle

  1. As the bus approaches, have your bike ready to load. Remember to remove water bottles, pumps or any loose items that may fall off.
  2. Let the operator know that you're loading your bike. For safety reasons, the driver cannot get off of the bus to help you. However, he or she can give you further instructions.
  3. For your own safety, always load and unload your bike from the passenger side of the bus (the side closest to the curb) rather than from the driver side.
  4. Pull down to release the folded bike rack. You can do this with one hand so that you can hold your bike with your hand.
  5. Lift your bike onto the rack, fitting the wheels into the slots. Each slot is labelled to let you know where your front and rear wheels should go. Remember to load your bike in the outside slot first.
  6. Raise and release the support arm over the top of the front tire. Be sure the support arm is resting on your bike tire and not on your bike fender or frame.

Unloading your bicycle

  1. Remember to let the Operator know that you need to unload your bike.
  2. Raise the support arm off of your bike. Move the support arm down and out of your way.
  3. Lift your bike out of the rack.
  4. Fold up the bike rack if there is no other bike in it.

Benefits of Bike & Ride
A regular ride will help to keep you in shape, as well as save you money on parking, gasoline, insurance and car maintenance. Biking and busing also reduce traffic congestion and preserve Red Deer's environment.

Rules of the Road
C
yclists are required to know and follow the rules of the road. It is illegal to ride a bicycle on a sidewalk in the downtown area unless it has been designated as a bikeway.

Buses make frequent stops along the road. Cyclists attempting to pass on the right as a bus pulls into a transit zone could end up on the curb, the boulevard or worse – under the wheels of the bus.

Liability
T
he City of Red Deer is not responsible for damages incurred or caused by bicycles on Red Deer Transit property.
