(Red Deer, Alberta) – The City of Red Deer Emergency Services reminds residents of the danger related to present water levels in the Red Deer River.
“With warm sunny weather predicted over the next few days, the temptation will be strong for people to float down the river. However, the current is several times faster and stronger than what it typically is during the summer months. Cold, murky water, trees, branches and other floating debris also add to the risk,” said Jeff Lunder, Platoon Chief with Red Deer Emergency Services.
“People are encouraged to wait until levels drop off before planning an outing on the river. If you are out on the river wear an approved personal flotation device.”
Due to the fast flowing current, on June 19 at 9:30 p.m., 911 Dispatch Center received a call from a pet owner near Three Mile Bend who lost his dog when it was swept away in the river.
At the time, Red Deer Firemedics were on the river training with their rescue boat and headed down the river to see if the pet could be spotted. After searching downstream as far as the Riverbend canoe launch, the search was called off. Fortunately, the dog was found near his owners’ truck shortly after.
