(Red Deer, Alberta) – The Red Deer Firefighters, in collaboration with students at Mattie McCullough Elementary School, will host a barbecue to help raise money for Grade 4 student Taylor Attema and her family.
Taylor was diagnosed with leukemia and underwent a stem cell transplant on June 7. As a result, she will stay in the Calgary Children’s Hospital for many weeks. Taylor and her family will then stay in an apartment close to the hospital for several months to help reduce the risk of infection and ensure she is closely monitored.
To date, students at Mattie McCullough Elementary School have raised more than $3,000. The Red Deer Firefighter’s Children’s Charity hopes to help the students achieve their goal of raising at least $5,000.
“The family has incurred extensive financial costs,” said Greg Murray of the Red Deer Firefighters Children’s Charity. “These students have rallied to support Taylor and her family. They are the driving force behind this fundraiser and truly understand the importance of helping people in our community.”
The barbecue will run from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Tuesday, June 26 at Mattie McCullough Elementary School in Lancaster. The firefighters will be on hand with a fire truck and dunk tank. Citizens are encouraged to come out and enjoy food and fun while students try to dunk some of their favourite teachers.
Donations for Taylor can be dropped off at Mattie McCullough Elementary School or any Red Deer Fire Hall.
Cheques must be made out to the Red Deer Fire Fighters Children’s Charity. Tax receipts will be issued for any donation of $20 or more.
The Red Deer Firefighters Children’s Charity also organizes the Christmas tree pick up and donates to a variety of non-profit groups including The Red Deer Hospice Society, Loaves and Fishes, Women’s Outreach Centre and Shelter, Circus Camp and the Red Deer Regional Hospital.
