Provincial cabinet approves annexation application

November 28, 2007

(Red Deer, Alberta) – An annexation application submitted by The City of Red Deer has been approved by the provincial cabinet. This application was submitted on December 20, 2006 and includes lands to be developed primarily for industrial use.

The application includes eight quarter sections or approximately five square kilometres west of the Queen Elizabeth II Highway and south of Highway 11A. These lands will be incorporated into city boundaries and will provide approximately 20 years of developable industrial land.

“We are delighted with this news,” said Mayor Morris Flewwelling. “As Red Deer grows, there is an increased need for developable land. Approval of this application means we can move forward with future planning, allowing us to provide the necessary industrial land to support our growth.”

The City’s first priority following receipt of the annexation order is connecting with affected residents and business owners about the details and impacts of Cabinet’s decision.

“The City is really thankful for landowners’ participation in the public consultation process. The input received, in addition to collaborative work done with Red Deer County and support from local MLAs ensures that this annexation reflects the needs of all affected.”

This annexation is in agreement with the Intermunicipal Development Plan (IDP), adopted by The City and Red Deer County on July 5, 2007. The IDP encourages The City to annex the entire City Growth Area within ten years.
