(Red Deer, Alberta) – The City’s annual Green Deer community clean-up campaign kicks off on April 21 with a free community barbeque, and everyone is encouraged to take part.
The two week campaign, which runs until May 4, is held in conjunction with national Pitch-In Week. It celebrates the cooperation of community associations, merchants, schools, local groups and individuals who keep Red Deer beautiful.
“Every year we’re overwhelmed at the community response to cleaning up the garbage that has collected in our parks and neighbourhoods over the winter,” said Suzanne Jubb, Community and Program Facilitator with Recreation, Parks & Culture. “The people of Red Deer have such feelings of pride and ownership in our beautiful community, and taking part in Green Deer is an excellent way to get to know your neighbours and fellow citizens.”
Individuals and groups can register to pick up litter in their neighbourhoods or one of their favourite park areas. People are encouraged to register so that Green Deer organizers can provide them with cleaning supplies, track areas that are cleaned and recognize the hard work of all volunteers.
“Awareness of the need for environmentally responsible behaviour continues to grow and this campaign is a great place for people to start making a difference,” said Jubb. “Participation in Green Deer has led some groups to adopt parks and keep them clean throughout the entire year.”
Participants may register for Green Deer by visiting the Collicutt and Recreation Centre, by calling (403) 309-8411, or at the Green Deer kick-off barbeque. Everyone who registers is entered to win a barbeque event hosted by Z99 and KG Country, Canadian Tire, Save-On Foods, Fas Gas Plus Community Care and The City of Red Deer.
The Green Deer kick-off barbeque will be held April 21 from 5 to 7 p.m. at the corner of 48 Avenue and 43 Street, in the parking lot north of the skateboard park, where the Farmers’ Market is located.
Food and beverages for the kick-off barbeque are sponsored by Save-on Foods and Tim Hortons, and supported by a donation from TD Friends of the Environment Foundation. The barbeque is free for all who register to take part in Green Deer. Bags from Green Deer clean-up may be placed out with household garbage for regular garbage pick-up. Green Deer bags will not count as part of the five-bag household limit.
