Green Deer campaign extended due to winter weather conditions
April 29, 2008
(Red Deer, Alberta) – The annual Green Deer clean-up campaign has been extended and will run until May 18 this year. Individuals and groups may register by calling 403-309-8411 or in person at the Recreation or Collicutt Centres. Green Deer was originally slated to run until May 4.
“The extension was necessary because of the unseasonal weather last week,” said Suzanne Jubb, Community and Program Facilitator for The City of Red Deer. “It’s not until the snow melts that we are able to see all the litter that has accumulated over the winter, and get out there to clean it up.”
People are encouraged to register so that Green Deer organizers can provide them with cleaning supplies, track areas that are cleaned and recognize the hard work of all volunteers. Everyone who registers is entered to win a barbeque event hosted by Z99 and KG Country and sponsored by Canadian Tire, Save-On Foods, Fas Gas Plus Community Care and The City of Red Deer.
“Green Deer is one of the signs that spring is here to stay,” said Jubb. “I think we’re all anxious to get out there, enjoy the sunshine and reclaim our neighbourhoods and parks by making them beautiful again.”
Bags from Green Deer clean-up may be placed out with household garbage for regular garbage pick-up. Green Deer bags will not count as part of the five-bag household limit. Bags are available from organizers at the time of registration.
