(Red Deer, Alberta) – The public is invited to review the results of phase one of the Red Deer Historic Site Survey at an open house on April 8 from 4 to 6 p.m. in the Discovery Room at the Red Deer Museum + Art Gallery.
During phase one, Heritage Collaborative Consultants surveyed 400 Red Deer homes and businesses 50 years old or older. Some further historical research was conducted on each of these sites, including dates of construction when known, the builders, the early occupants and owners, as well as the background and the site’s historical context.
“There was tremendous public interest as phase one proceeded, and now we invite further comment and input before we move to the next phase,” said Janet Pennington, Heritage and Archives Coordinator. “From the initial survey, we will develop a list of ‘Places of Interest.’ This list will provide the basis for phase two, the Historic Site Inventory.”
The inventory provides a more rigorous historical evaluation. Statements of Significance will be written for the more significant sites, outlining their heritage value and character-defining elements. The most significant sites will then be recommended for municipal designation and placement on the Alberta Registry of Historic Places. Heritage buildings are only designated with the participation and cooperation of the landowner.
“This project will establish a foundation for further heritage research, as well as the planning, conservation, and management of Red Deer’s many historic places,” said Pennington. “It will also be used to update the current heritage survey held by Alberta Tourism, Parks, Recreation, and Culture.”
This project is part of The City of Red Deer Heritage Management Plan, which was approved by City Council in September 2006. Funding for the project is provided by matching dollars from the Province’s Municipal Heritage Partnership Program and the Red Deer Heritage Fund.
