(Red Deer, Alberta) – Due to the severe weather experienced in Red Deer last Friday, The City will approach the province for funding through the Disaster Recovery Assistance program. In order to support the request for funding, The City is asking citizens who experienced overland flooding to call in and register their damage.
“We would like to find a way to help support the citizens of Red Deer who may have experienced damages last Friday,” said City Manager Craig Curtis. “It is not guaranteed that the province will accept our application, but for some citizens dealing with disaster, it might give them the support they need.”
While people can buy insurance for sewer backups and hail damage, overland flooding, such as when water pours into a basement through windows, is not insurable for homes in Alberta and is very expensive to insure for businesses.
Citizens who have experienced overland flooding are asked to call our Environmental Services main line at 403-342-8750. Environmental Services staff will ask residences who call the following questions:
- Did you encounter a sewer backup in the residence or overland flooding from outside the residence?
- Have you contacted your insurance agent or company?
They will also remind citizens to keep track of all costs related to the clean-up and to take photos of any damage and have them available for insurance evaluators.
“If our application for disaster recovery assistance is approved, citizens will need to have photos and costs tracked for the evaluator to review,” said Don Huestis, Disaster Services Coordinator. “We want to make sure citizens are aware of the required information the province will need to issue relief funding.”
