Who has the best looking rain barrel - you be the judge

August 18, 2008

(Red Deer, Alberta) – A rain barrel decorating media challenge is underway and we need your help to decide who has the best looking rain barrel in town.

Last week, local media were invited to decorate a rain barrel, submit a photo and wait for you to decide who ‘blinged out’ their rain barrel the best. Six local media outlets took the challenge and are waiting to see what you think about their barrel.

“Media with the best decorated rain barrel will win full bragging rights,” said Andrea Pagee, Water Conservation Specialist.

Photos of the decorated rain barrels are posted to The City’s website at reddeer.ca with voting closing at 4:30 p.m. on August 22. The rain barrels will then go on display at the Alexander Way Festival on August 23 with the winner to be announced at 3:20 p.m. on the Alexander Way main stage.

Citizens can also decorate their rain barrels and take part in the public challenge. “It doesn’t matter whether you have purchased a new rain barrel or whether you just want to pretty up your old one,” said Pagee. “We encourage everyone to participate and send in photos of their creative designs.”

The public challenge runs until August 31 when all participants will be entered in the rain barrel draw. Decorated rain barrels should not interfere with the safety of the barrel. This includes things like ensuring the rain barrel stays covered and remains child and mosquito-proof.

Entries need to contain a photo of the re-designed rain barrel with the owner’s name and contact information. Participants may be asked for permission regarding the use of their photo online or in City of Red Deer promotional material.

Entries can be submitted by mail or e-mail to:
