(Red Deer, Alberta) – The Bower Ponds stage will come down today with plans already underway to erect a new stage next spring.
This change is just one of many Bower Ponds improvements that stem from the Special Gathering Places study approved in 2005. The Bower Ponds stage was constructed in 1983 and improvements are required to enhance its usability. Through a consultation process with stakeholder groups, a final stage design was achieved to meet the needs of stage users and the public.
The stage will remain on the northwest side of Bower Ponds near the Cronquist House. It will feature a storage room, improved power servicing, canopy, sound control vault, and design elements that make it more accessible to stage users and the public.
“It is all about creating special places where people can continue to enjoy recreation, leisure and cultural opportunities in Red Deer,” said Jeff Graves, Project Superintendent. “Bower Ponds is a cultural hub in our community and we are committed to enhancing and maintaining valuable community assets like the Bower Ponds stage.”
Other improvements underway at Bower Ponds include installation of additional picnic tables, benches and gazebos; a serenity garden; more public art; additional linkages to Waskasoo Park Trails; and a new playground structure near the Trans Canada Trail Pavilion.
“We are making Bower Ponds an authentic destination of choice for Red Deer citizens. There will be something for everyone to enjoy,” said Graves.
Bower Ponds will remain open while the improvement work is underway. There may be temporary trail closures and disruptions due to construction and machinery in the area. Public are reminded to stay a safe distance from all machinery and take extra precaution while in the Bower Ponds area.
