City tests new snow and ice control method
January 22, 2008
(Red Deer, Alberta) – The City is handling snow and ice differently this year with the trial use of anti-icing liquid.
“Safety is our first priority,” said Roads Superintendent Steve Wright. “We are always looking for more proactive ways to address snow and ice. This anti-icing solution is an innovative way to help ensure more efficient consistencies and safer streets for all drivers and citizens in Red Deer.”
Anti-icing is the application of liquid de-icer that prevents snow and ice from freezing to the pavement. This year, The City will determine how much liquid to apply based on the type of road surface, temperatures and snow depth.
“The liquid solution will be used in conjunction with The City’s standard snow and ice control practices. We are committed to maintaining high levels of service, and will continue to plow City streets and remove snow on a priority basis,” added Wright.
Ideally, the solution is applied to road surfaces before a storm. It keeps ice and snow from freezing to the road making it easier for plows to remove. It aims to improve road safety, reduce the use of abrasives and increase service levels.
Wright says the product will help reduce plow time, sand use and clean up. Sand can plug storm and sewer systems, cause pollution and sometimes damage cars. In turn, there is a high cost associated with sweeping, cleaning drainage systems and material disposal.
“Liquid de-icers are not the cure-all for controlling winter storms but when used properly its benefits are twofold. It will save The City money and reduce our impact on the environment,” said Wright.
