Property Assessment Notices are on the way
January 14, 2008
(Red Deer, Alberta) – Property owners will receive their 2008 property assessment this week after The City mailed out all assessment notices on January 11. Owners are reminded to review their assessment notice to ensure the information is accurate.
“It is important for owners to review the information on their Property Assessment Notice because we use this value to calculate the 2008 Property Tax Notice,” said Brian Lutz, City Assessor.
Each Property Tax Bill is based on the assessed property value multiplied by the property tax rate, which is determined by City Council in May. Property Tax Bills are mailed to owners in late May and payments are due by June 30, 2008.
“If owners don’t receive their Property Assessment Notices by January 31, they should contact our office,” said Lutz. “Property Tax notices, which arrive in May, can not be disputed; therefore, owners must try to resolve any concerns they have with their assessments before Tuesday, February 19 – the complaint deadline.”
If property owners believe there is an error in their property assessment, they should contact The City of Red Deer’s Assessment & Taxation Services at 342-8126 and arrange an appointment to speak with an assessor. Assessment & Taxation Services is located on the second floor of the Professional Building at 4808 50 Street.
“If property owners aren’t able to resolve their concerns through conversation with an assessor, they can submit a written complaint to the Clerk of the Assessment Review Board,” said Lutz. “The complaint must explain why they think the information or assessed value on the property assessment notice is incorrect.”
Property Assessment Notice complaints need to be hand delivered or mailed to the Clerk of the Assessment Review Board no later than February 19, 2008. The filing fee shown on the owner’s assessment notice must be included in the package with the complaint. Any complaints that arrive after February 19 will not be accepted regardless of the postmark date. The Clerk of the Assessment Review Board is located on the second floor of City Hall at 4914 48 Avenue; mail should be addressed to Box 5008, Red Deer, Alberta, T4N 3T4.
