The City signs five-year deal with ENMAX
July 24, 2008
(Red Deer, Alberta) – The City of Red Deer and ENMAX Energy Corporation have entered into a five-year contract that will see the energy provider continue to supply electricity to all City-owned facilities.
The City’s long-term relationship with the Alberta-based energy provider is continuing with an increased emphasis on renewable energy. The new contract begins January 1, 2009 and will be in place until December 31, 2013. A key feature of the new agreement is the increased commitment to renewable energy year-over-year.
“We are pleased to be continuing our partnership with ENMAX,” said Ligong Gan, Electric Light and Power Manager for The City of Red Deer. “We are looking forward to another five years working in partnership to supply energy to our municipal load.”
Under the new contract, 15 per cent of City’s own electricity requirement will be supplied from green power in 2009 escalating to 25 per cent in 2013, a significant increase from the current contract’s 10 per cent green power requirement over a three year term.
”We couldn’t be happier to again be selected by the City of Red Deer and believe they are one of the municipal pioneers leading the way to a more sustainable electricity environment,” said Gary Holden, President and CEO, ENMAX Corporation. “We have built a very strong partnership with Red Deer over the years and believe they are blazing a trail for other municipalities across the province.”
“ENMAX have been leaders in establishing sources of green power and that came through in their proposal,” said Gan. “The City made green power a requirement of all the providers that responded to the RFP and ENMAX was able to meet all requirements.”
Green power offers a more environmentally friendly option for producing electricity. Greenhouse gas emissions are reduced by using renewable energy from water, wind and sun in place of sources such as coal and natural gas. ENMAX currently provides wind-generated green power.
The City’s green power commitment of 7,840 megawatt hours in 2009 will increase to over 16,000 megawatt hours in 2013. This latter amount has the same positive impact on the environment as reducing 14,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide, or the same as taking 3,083 cars off the road for one year (based on fuel economy of a 1998 Taurus according to Natural Resources Canada and Carbonzero.ca).
The City has over 100 facilities that will be powered by ENMAX.
