(Red Deer, Alberta) – Wednesday, June 4 is Clean Air Day across the country, and Red Deer Transit encourages people to use Transit that day to get to work or play.
“This week is also Canadian Environment Week, so it’s a great motivation to try Transit if you’ve never done it before but are looking for a way to make a difference,” said Roger Bouchard, Transit Operations Superintendent. “With longer hours and service to almost all the newest areas in Red Deer, Transit fits with more lifestyles than you might think.”
The government of Canada designated the first Wednesday in June as Clean Air Day back in 1999, in response to community and environmental groups’ requests for nation-wide activities that highlight the importance of taking care of the air. The emphasis is on a grassroots approach, which is where individuals can have an impact by making even a small change.
“Taking Transit can also avoid traffic congestion on busy weekends when there is a lot going on in the same area,” said Deb Comfort, Neighbourhood Facilities and Community Development Supervisor with The City. “This weekend, we encourage people to take Transit to the Farmers Market and the Children’s Festival in order to avoid parking frustration. In the same area, a swim meet and a horseshoe tournament are also taking place. While that corner of the city will be a hive of fun activity, parking may prove a challenge.”
Red Deer Transit buses operate from 6:15 a.m. - 11:15 p.m. Monday through Saturday and from 8:45 a.m. - 6:45 p.m. on Sundays and holidays. Fares are $2.10 for adults, and $1.80 for youth, students and seniors. Exact fare is required as Transit operators do not carry change.
