(Red Deer, Alberta) – The Government of Alberta has released a draft land-use framework with the intent of receiving comments and feedback to improve the framework. The framework introduces a new land use planning system in Alberta and is intended to better manage the impacts of growth while balancing environmental, economic, and social-cultural sustainability.
“We appreciate the provincial leadership in moving forward this framework. It provides a strong general direction and key topic areas related to sustainability which is much needed,” says Mayor Morris Flewwelling.
Given the framework’s substantial potential impact on Alberta’s planning system, City administration is putting forward proposed recommendations to Council for consideration. If approved, the recommendations will be submitted to the Province in response to a request for feedback. The City believes that the following recommendations will strengthen the framework:
- Establish planning sub-regions into the very large South Region currently proposed in the framework.
- Clarify how the public can provide input into the regional plans before approval.
- Clarify how planning processes already underway will be impacted and how these will link with the proposed framework and what the interface between the departments of Municipal Affairs and Sustainable Resource Development will look like.
“These recommendations will strengthen the framework and ensure regional planning happens in an effective manner,” said City Manager Craig Curtis. “The framework must allow all stakeholders, including municipalities and our residents, the ability to continue to present how we see planning and development occurring in the central Alberta region.”
It is expected that municipalities will need to ensure the core principles of the new framework are reflected in their local plans and day to day planning decisions. With this level of local impact, it is imperative that The City and residents take time to consider the framework and provide relevant feedback to the Province.
